Learn more about Berlin Brandenburg Airport
The Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region's latest airport, the Brandenburg Airport Berlin (BER), has replaced the previously shut down Tegel and Schönefeld airports, which were both considered outdated and insufficient to deal with the numbers associated with modern air travel. It is also known as Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt, after the Mayor of West Berlin who won a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts towards reconciliation with East Berlin and the Soviet Bloc.
There were many problems during the construction of this new airport, leading to a delay of nearly a decade. Eventually, it was officially opened in October 2020 and is situated approximately 15 kilometers southeast of Berlin. Theoretically, it can serve 46 million passengers per year, a number that will increase to 58 million by 2035 if all goes to plan. To reach the city, you can utilize the express bus service (FlixBus or BerlinLinienBus) or take the regional S-Bahn train, which typically takes around 30 minutes.
