Learn more about Lisbon Airport
Also called Humberto Delgado, Lisbon ANA is located 7 km northeast of the Lisbon center. It is known as TAP Air Portugal’s main hub and first opened in 1942. As Portugal was a neutral country during World War II, it didn’t serve as a military base during the war but was somewhere from many people were smuggled into or out of Europe. Indeed, the classic film Casablanca, often considered one of the best and most well-known films ever, centers around smuggling people through Lisbon. It’s now highly busy, serving over 30 million passengers at its pre-pandemic height. However, it's at capacity - there’s only a single runway, meaning it’s Europe’s busiest single-runway airport. Plans are therefore in place both to expand it and to begin construction of a new one serving Lisbon.
From there, a line will take you to Lisbon Oriente in about 10 minutes. The Aeroporto Metro stop is in Terminal 1, and it connects passengers to downtown Lisbon within 20 minutes. If you’re traveling with cabin-size baggage, you can hop on a Carris bus, which has various connections: Marquis of Pombal Square and Amoreiras during the day and downtown Baixa, Cais do Sodré, and Oriente stations at night. Passengers with larger bags have to use Aerobuses to the downtown area, which can be found in Terminals 1 and 2 and run from 7.30 am to 11 pm. Passengers flying in and out can enjoy a wide range of amenities, including numerous restaurants, cafes, and shops, as well as various shops.
