If you haven't added Trastevere to your list, do it fast! This vibrant and lively neighborhood is a popular destination for tourists to visit in Rome.
Trastevere is located on the west bank of the Tiber River, south of Vatican City and north of the historic center of Rome. And it is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city of Rome. However, Trastevere hasn't always been a part of Rome. Back in 753-509 BC (Roman's Regal era), the area was under the control of the Etruscans. Later it was believed that Rome conquered the area, giving access and control to the river. However, the Romans had no interest in developing it.
In 509 BC, many sailors and fishermen began moving to Trastevere as they were making a living from the river. Immigrants from the East, mainly the Jews, and Syrians, also began settling there. Trastevere started to be considered part of the city under Augustus, who divided Rome into 14 regions (regions in Latin). It was the XIV region and was named Trans Tiberim.
While you're in Trastevere, don't miss out on the beautiful Villa Farnesina. It is a Renaissance villa with beautiful gardens and frescoes. Wealthy banker Agostino Chigi built the villa in the early 16th century. Today, it is considered to be one of the most important examples of Renaissance architecture in Rome.
