Learn more about Châtelet
Châtelet (or Châtelet-Les Halles as the RER station is called) is a huge train and underground station in a region of Paris by the same name, located in the first arrondissement. Indeed, when the whole complex is considered, it is the largest underground station in the world! Technically, there are separate Châtelet and Les Halles (named after the market halls that used to dominate the area) underground stations, but these are connected underground. Built in 1977, this is one of the busiest transport hubs in the city. It is served by three RER lines and five underground lines that pass by twenty platforms at the station. Each weekday, around 750,000 people pass through. The underground space is so big that it is divided into three sectors: Rivoli (the area nearest the large Rue de Rivoli to the North), Forum (named after the Forum des Halles, a shopping center that is accessible from the station), and Seine, the part of the complex closest to the river.
