Learn more about Brussels North Train Station

Brussels North station, also known as Gare du Nord, is one of the main railway stations in Brussels, Belgium. It is located in the north of the city, near the central district, in a municipality called Schaerbeek, in the middle of the Northern Quarter business district (also called Little Manhattan). It is the second busiest station in Belgium after Brussels South station. The history of the station dates back to the mid-19th century when the first plans were made to build a new railway station in Brussels. The first Brussels North train station was finished in 1846. It was a single-storey building that stretched in width from the Rue d'Aerschot/Aarschotstraat to the Rue du Progrès/ Vooruitgangsstraat, and in length, from the Place Rogier to the Avenue de la Reine/Koninginnelaan. It consisted of 27 tracks and quickly became the densest and busiest in continental Europe. By the mid-20th century, however, it became clear that a new railway building was required. This was completed just a short distance to the north near the old station, designed in the modernist style, which became popular in Europe after World War Two by Jacques and Paul Saintenoy. The site of the old station on Place Rogier was destroyed in 1955. There was a bus station built on the site. The tallest building in Belgium until its 2001 demolition, the Rogier International Centre, also called the Martini Tower, also housed the National Theatre of Belgium, which was replaced by the enormous 137-meter Rogier Tower. The current North station is bordered by an extensive public transport complex, the North Communication Center (or CCN) built in the 1970s and constantly being expanded; while it and its offices are in an attractive art deco style, some commentators think that these offices slightly detract from the spectacle of the train station and its clock tower. Now, the station services around 200,000 travelers per week. It is the terminus of the north-south metro line; it has 12 platforms servicing 32 lines and over 30 regional bus routes.
